What are Talking Mats?
Talking Mats is a simple but powerful tool that helps our young people share their thoughts and feelings, especially if talking is tricky.
Using a mat, some picture cards, and a visual scale (such as happy, not sure, unhappy), the young person can place cards to show how they feel about different topics, such as school, friends, activities, or health. It turns difficult conversations into something clear, visual, and easy to understand.
Why we use it in Speech & Language Therapy
It makes conversations easier for people who find speaking, understanding, or confidence a bit tricky. It also gives them a way to be more involved in making decisions about their own lives.
And for caregivers, families, therapists, and professionals, it offers a clearer picture of what the person really thinks and wants.
How it Works
Talking Mats helps people make choices and speak up for themselves by giving them a clear, structured way to communicate. It reduces frustration, works well with young people who have a wide range of needs, and ensures the person’s voice is always at the heart of planning and support.
Choosing a Topic
The therapist and individual agree on what they want to talk about (e.g. school, friends, activities, health).
Introducing the Visual Scale
A scale is set up on the mat, such as; not sure, don’t like, happy, unsure, or unhappy. This gives a clear visual way to sort feelings or preferences.
Sorting & Talking
Symbol cards representing different aspects of the topic are introduced one by one.
The young person places each card under the part of the scale that best matches how they feel. The therapist listens, notices patterns, and may gently explore choices further.
